Like all large dogs, Golden Retrievers live not very long - only up to 12 years, but they remain lively and active for the most of their lives. This breed is prone to several genetic disorders, such as hip dysplasia, Von Willebrand's disease, eye and heart problems. Skin allergies are also common in Golden Retrievers. Prior to mating all breeding stock, each Golden Retriever should be checked for all disorders typical of the breed. Both parents should have OFA and CERF certificates. Senior dogs of this breed tend to put on weight, so you should try not to over feed your pet because it leads to numerous disorders.

Being very active, Golden Retrievers need daily exercise; they are moderately active indoors. They can be kept in an apartment only if you walk with the dog every day, it is better to have a large fenced yard. These creatures like to play, run, retrieve objects and investigate everything new. So, be careful when walking with the pet - any interesting smell can lead the dog very far and it may not find the way back.

If you plan to show your dog, it requires professional grooming. Pet quality animals are beautiful enough when groomed occasionally. The coat of these dogs is easy to comb. Baths with dog shampoo should not be frequent; otherwise the coats of Golden Retrievers can become too dry.
