This breed appeared in the end of the 19th century, but the specific appearance of these dogs was developed in the beginning of the 20th century. The breed owes its origin to hunting with guns. Invention of a gun made hunting rather easy, but to reach for the killed or wounded game, hunters had to make their way through bushes or marshes. Hence, there was a great demand for a dog able to find and fetch game both on land and in water. Breeders experimented much with crossing various hunting breeds.
