To find healthy, genetically sound puppies, search for a breeder through the AKC, to insure they are following the required guidelines for breeding puppies.
The first weeks of life are the most important for the dog’s further progress, so you should be very careful choosing a reputable breeder who is able to provide the best care and socialization for the dog. Dogs should be raised in loving and stress-free environment. Purebred dogs should not be taken to new homes before they are 8 weeks of age, because otherwise they will be difficult to train. Reputable breeders will not allow you to see the litter before it is at least 4 weeks, because the pups are not vaccinated yet.

Second hand dogs of this breed form close bonds with their new families, if well cared for, and forgive the mistakes their previous owners have made. Golden Retrievers of any age can become good family companions. People who aren't prepared to give the dog proper socialization and training should consider an older or even a senior dog. If a young dog spends much time unsupervised, it’s likely to develop bad habits and become difficult to train. A well-trained and socialized adult dog can be left alone and adapt to the new conditions.
