There exist organizations accepting senior or special needs dogs from owners and shelters. Such refuges help the dogs who are hard to adopt or unadoptable by ordinary standards. People rarely adopt such dogs and the majority of them live in the sanctuary for the rest of their lives. Sanctuaries are always in need for donations, as they are non-profit and volunteer-staffed. Everybody may sponsor a dog if one doesn’t want to adopt or foster it. The adoption process includes completing an application, reference and home check and paying an adoption fee.

Though these dogs make wonderful pets, it so happens that their owners cannot keep them any longer. The main reasons for surrendering a dog are allergy to dog hair, a newborn baby, death or divorce, financial problems, and so forth. Responsible owners will do everything possible for the well-being of the dog. A purebred dog can be surrendered to a special volunteer organization that helps dogs of this breed. The majority of abandoned dogs are senior. Adult and senior dogs are a good choice for families with children and those who have no time for socializing and housetraining a puppy.
