These dogs are very strong and athletic, easy to train and extremely intelligent. They are friendly with people and other dogs and have a versatile use. Their original aim is participating in hunting and retrieving waterfowl from water and land; they can also be taught to guard the house. Having a keen sense of smell, these dogs are good at arson and drugs searching, they can also be trained to be the guides for the blind and handicapped. These dogs are easy to train different tricks. Sometimes due to poor socialization these dogs tend to dominate.

The origin of the breed dates back to the 19th century, when there was a strong demand for hunting dogs. Ancestors of the modern dogs varied much in coat texture and color. Their coats were both straight and wavy and the coat color ranged from fox red to light cream. Sir Dudley Marjoribanks (aka Lord Tweedmouth) was the first breeder who crossed several hunting dogs in an attempt to create a new breed.
