These dogs were developed for bringing the downed fowl from the water or land. The dogs should be strong, agile and intelligent and are particularly valued for their soft mouth, which allows not to damage game while bringing it to the hunter. Balance, gait and working abilities are more important in this breed than conformation. A healthy dog should be active, self-confident and with an alert personality. The average height of these dogs varies from 22 to 24 inches at the withers; their weight reaches up to 75 pounds. The body length should slightly exceed the height.
