A purebred pet should be chosen very carefully. Ask the breeder for health certificates for both parents and read a four or five generation pedigree on the litter. Knowledge of the status of grandparents, siblings, and other relatives with regard to genetic testing is also desirable. Titles alone are no guarantee of genetic value. Breeding stock should have clear hips, elbows, eyes and heart. Any inheritable defect, such as overshot or undershot jaw, congenital heart defects, skin problems, epilepsy and others are reasons not to breed.
